SQL Server database restore error: specified cast is not valid (SqlManagerUI)

I was trying to restore a database back up on SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
Error was thrown on attempting to restore the database as'
Specified Case is not valid (SqlManagerUI).

Asked my peer, which SQL version they used to create the backup file.

It was created using SQL SERVER 2012.

Installed a fresh copy of 2012 and restore the required DB.
